It started as a hobby.
That can be said about a lot of things. Riding a bike, watching the birds, planting a garden. But sometimes these hobbies take on a new emotion all together: a passion.
My name is Will Hyde and I am the hands behind Hyde Woodworking Company; LLC. I am based in Saint Louis, Missouri, and I began my woodworking journey in 2016.
Here is how it started:
We had purchased our first home and were looking for a TV console. Everything we saw was cheaply made and overpriced. I told Stephanie, my wife and best friend, that I could build one for the same price (and get some tools out of it). I bought a few cheap tools and set up shop in our basement. After work, and in the days when I had free time, I spent it building different basic projects for our house. As time went on, and more tools were acquired, I wanted to up my game and sell some crafts at a craft show.
In 2017 I registered my first business, “hydewoods”, and began prepping crafts to sell. Stephanie helped me load up a U-Haul and drive down to Kimmswick, MO, for the Strawberry Festival. It was a hot, humid, and rainy weekend, but we managed to have some fun and broke even on the costs. It also brought me joy to see other people interested in my work!
After that I cranked into gear, I started building more and more, did more craft shows, built my arsenal of tools, read books, watched videos, practiced design, and found my style. I was ready to go full time - after we had saved some money.
In 2019, we moved to a new house and welcomed our daughter, Olive, into the world. Then came COVID. What a whirlwind of events.
In 2020 we had saved some money, I had the tools needed, and I launched Hyde Woodworking and Design full-time.
Between Fall 2020 to May 2023, to fill some financial gaps, I briefly taught middle and high school wood shop, worked at an industrial wood shop, and did some data analysis. This time was crucial to learning more about the industry, finding efficiencies in workflow, and learning my boundaries.
It was time for a fresh start, so I started Hyde Woodworking Company; LLC in March 2023 with some new and improved importances to my business. I use a semi-colon in my design to show my support for people struggling with mental illness. I added Kalamata olives to my logo to signify my love for my daughter. I incorporated a three word slogan:
Handmade; I make all products in my 1100 square foot workshop. I use a mix of traditional and modern techniques. There is no mass production shop. I hand select high end materials and build each project unique to the customer’s needs.
Local; I support local businesses as much as possible. I source all lumber locally and sustainably. I have relationships and collaborate with local businesses.
Sustainable; I prioritize using sustainable lumber and fair trade materials as much as possible. I use tools to sustain my physical and mental health.
I am happy to provide free estimates, quotes, designs and drawings. I love a good challenge, and would love to work with you on your wants and needs for custom furniture.
